I caught two Largemouth Bass today but did not bring them in to the boat. Each time, I saw the fish spit the bait. I feel this was because I did not “set the hook” with authority.
The bite was subtle as the water is still cold and the Bass are a bit slow. When this happens I usually wait longer for the fish to take the bait before setting the hook. Often, the excitement gets the best of me, especially when there hasn’t been any action in a while.
If and when you decide to set the hook, give it “HE double toothpicks” [HELL] I would much rather lose a fish at the set than 6″ from the boat.
