Two of the best ways to catch a big Bass is to lure him in with the food that he eats everyday. Big Bass eat big, wild shiners. When presented in the right way, a big shiner at the end of your line will look like a slightly injured tasty snack to a giant, lurking Bass.
Free Lining - For this method a boat is required. Use a heavier line as you may encounter vegetation. Hook the shiner through his chin or open mouth and out of his nose. Use no weight; a live shiner will keep himself swimming the right way. Hook him in the mouth and out the nostril with a no. 2-4 hook. Let some line out as you troll the boat. The further you let the shiner out, the more he is able to swim up and down through the water column. It is not uncommon to either feel your rod pull erratically or see the shiner jump out of the water as he is about to become a meal. Be patient and then set the hook.
Hide and Seek - This can be done from a boat or dock. Use heavy or braided line. When a shiner is hooked in the back, he will swim away from you. This is no little minnow. A shiner will swim under lily pads and into cover where the big Bass lie in wait. Send your bait where you think the Bass may be concentrated. When you hook up, you will have to pull him out of the vegetation, so be prepared for an exciting battle.
Try fishing with wild shiners and feel the excitement of luring a Largemouth Bass in with one of its natural food sources.
